Evan Jones: Rugby in His Blood and Heol-y-Cyw in His Heart

A player who has rugby in his blood, not just rugby, but Heol-y-Cyw RFC. Evan Jones gives everything for the Cyw whenever he’s on the pitch. Jones’ love for the game and the club shines through. He has a great story to tell; let’s dive in.

Foundations

“I’ve grown up around rugby and have played since Under 7s, all the way through to seniors with Bridgend Sports. I’ve always loved playing with my mates, but I reached a point where I wanted to push myself and improve as a player, which led me to move to Heol-y-Cyw.”

The game has been a consistent presence throughout Jones’ life. He learnt and sharpened his craft in a Bridgend Sports kit. However, he eventually found his way to Heol-y-Cyw, a club that is in his blood.

“I’ve been around the club for as long as I can remember. I used to come down and watch them play on Saturdays, and sometimes helped out by bringing the tee and water during games. It’s my dad’s and grandad’s club, so being able to play for the same club now means a lot to me.”

Across the nation, many rugby clubs mean a tremendous amount to people. Jones explains why Heol-y-Cyw holds a special place in his heart.

A special club

“Heol-y-Cyw is only a small village, so competing at such a high level against teams from much bigger towns and areas is pretty special. Everyone gets behind the club and does their bit, and I think that sense of community is what makes it such a great club.”

When a player represents the Cyw, they're not just representing a club. They are representing a village. There is a tremendous buzz whenever the team plays at home. Steadfast support, loud voices and passion. Jones describes how special it is to run out for the village.

“There’s honestly not much better than it. Being in the huddle before a game, knowing you’re about to go out and give everything for your teammates and the village, is a great feeling. The support from everyone on the sidelines is always brilliant too. Playing at home gives you that extra bit of energy to make another carry, or another tackle, or do whatever needs to be done. It definitely makes a difference.”

After the club’s first season in Division One, they will be looking to have a strong season.

Last season and this season

“It was always a great feeling playing for the team. Last season was tough at times, but we stuck together and kept fighting for each other. We finished the season well, which gave us something positive to build on this season.”

He also shared his thoughts on this season and the Builth Wells clash.

“I’m really looking forward to it. We looked really good against Builth Wells last Saturday. Obviously, we were disappointed not to get the result, but there were plenty of positives to take from the game. We played well as a team, and if we keep working hard and improving, I think we can have a really good season.”

Jones is a great player and Heol-y-Cyw through and through. A competitor who gives it his all for his club, his team, the village.
